Munster Head into Battle

Munster completed their preparations for the Heineken Cup opener against Bourgoin with a morning workout in Temple Hill (Cork Constitution RFC) on Wednesday, and are now on route to Lyon.

Afterwards Alan Gaffney named a side that showed just one change from the side that started against Cardiff Blues with Mossie Lawlor making way for the fit-again John Kelly. It was Gaffney admitted a difficult decision to omit Lawlor who has been in impressive form of late.

“Mossie has done superbly well for us and had another good game last weekend. But John had originally been picked for that game so that’s why he gets the nod on this occasion. Of course its tough on Mossie but this is very much a squad effort, we’ll need more than 15 if we hope to win anything.”

In the continued absence of Anthony Horgan (hamstring) Shaun Payne, try scorer against Cardiff retains his place on the wing while the pack remains the same. That’s hardly a surprise in either case. Payne had a rock solid game against the Welsh side and that after returning from injury while the Munster eight simply blew their counterparts away with Frank Sheahan, Donnacha O’Callaghan, Jim Williams and Anthony Foley in particularly impressive form.

Munster set out on their journey today with the early risers departing from Cork mid morning, stopping off to collect the Limerick contingent en route to Lyon.

Reports of heavy rain in the area of Bourgoin mean that conditions underfoot will be heavy but the chances of the game being affected are not thought to be serious as the forecast for the weekend is that it’s to be cloudy but dry.
