Maoris Warm Up With 12 Try Win

The New Zealand Maoris, who Ireland meet next in the Churchill Cup, warmed up for that encounter with a 12 try, 74-6 win over the United States yesterday.

Lock Kristian Ormsby scored four tries in a man-of-the-match performance as the New Zealand Maori routed the United States 74-6 in their opening game at the Churchill Cup rugby tournament in San Francisco today.

After organising and adjusting their set pieces and tidying up the tackle area in the first 15 minutes, the Maori were unstoppable in running in 12 tries.

Winger Cory Jane crossed for three and Liam Messam two as the New Zealand side displayed a powerful and balanced game using their forwards and backs.

The other Maori tries came from winger Zar Lawrence, fullback Shannon Paku and tighthead prop Mike Noble.

Otago first five-eighth Matt Berquist, who is moving to Hawke’s Bay for the Air New Zealand Cup, kicked seven conversions.

“We played very well after a settling down period in the first 15 to 20 minutes,” Maori coach Donny Stevenson told NZPA.

“But we’ve got a few areas to work on. We’ve identified a few areas we have to tidy up and for the other games but we’ve got such a short turn around time between games — basically one training session only — to do that.”

North Harbour’s Noble, Otago halfback Chris Smylie, Berquist, Waikato midfield back Richard Kahui and North Harbour’s Lawrence made their debut for the Maori side.

The Maori side, who beat an understrength New South Wales lineup 20-16 in their only warm-up before the tournament, next play Ireland A on Sunday (NZ time). Ireland A beat the US 28-13 earlier this week.
