Garryowen Clinch ODM Munster Senior Cup Title

Garryowen clinched the ODM Munster Senior Cup with an 18-13 victory over Cork Constitution in Thomond Park on Saturday

ODM Munster Senior Challenge Cup Final

Garryowen 18-13 Cork Constitution

The ODM Munster Senior Challenge Cup will remain Limerick side for another year, as Garryowen claimed their 36th Munster Senior Cup title, and their first since 1999, with an 18-13 win over Cork Constitution at Thomond Park on Saturday in what was a gritty, hard fought game.

From the off, Garryowen dominated proceedings territorially and in terms of possession, however, their missed scoring opportunities throughout the game ensured Cork Constitution remained very much in the mix until the final whistle.  Garryowen full back Conor Kilroy missed two early penalties in the first seven minutes, and it wasn’t until the 17th minute that Garryowen put their first points on the board, with Kilroy finding his mark with his third kick.  Constitution reformed and worked hard at the breakdown, winning more possession and ensuring that sniping runs from Peter McKee at scrum half and out half Darragh Lyons kept Garryowen on their toes.  Just before the half hour mark, a Garryowen penalty kicked by Eoghan Hickey failed to find its target, and Constitution grabbed an equaliser to put their first points on the board on 31 minutes with a penalty kicked by winger Daniel Nethery.  Hickey’s drop goal attempt five minutes before the break was just wide however, Garryowen got the edge going into half time with a try from Mark Melbourne after some excellent work by the centre partnership of Doyle and Hartigan.  With the try not converted, Garryowen led 8-3 at the break.

Conditions deteriorated dramatically in the second half as rain settled over Thomond Park.  Four minutes after the restart, Nethery notched up another three points with a penalty kick, bringing Constitution within a score of the leaders.  Garryowen responded immediately with a surge on the Constitution line, with Conan Doyle showing tremendous ball carrying skill as they edged closer and closer to the line.  The relentless pressure paid off as centre Kevin Hartigan eventually got the touch down on 48 minutes.  A sure footed Hickey kicked a stunning conversion from the touch line, increasing Garryowen’s lead to 15-6.  Garryowen’s supporters’ euphoria was short lived as Constitution’s counter attack was immediate.  Centre Tom Gleeson crossed the line after 54 minutes after tremendous pressure from the Constitution back row of Brendan Cuttriss, Ross Noonan and Frank Cogan.  With Nethery adding the extras, the score was 15-13 going into the final stages.  Hickey missed an opportunity to stretch his side’s lead on 58 minutes with a missed penalty kick, however, he was on target on the 76th minute, giving Garryowen a 5 point lead which they clung onto until the final whistle, despite the best efforts of Constitution.
