Mallow Girls Rugby News

It was an impressive weekend for Mallow rugby girls at U18 and at U14 level, the U18 had a good win over Clonmel while the U 14 had an amazing win over second placed St Mary’s from Limerick

U18 Mallow v Clonmel

Mallow had already played Clonmel in Clonmel earlier in the season and had won comfortably enough, this was the home fixture and Mallow girls were surprised how much they had improved. It would be fair to say Mallow won this game playing poorly; they were not as crisp as previous occasions. This again was a changed side with some players coming back from injury and a few caps as well. The scoring opened from Mallow when Aisling Glynn produced some good footwork on her opposite number and floated a nice pass to her sister, Munster player Mary Kate Glynn who scored in the corner. The second try came from Mallow as second row Brid O’Sullivan picked up and raced away to score. Clonmel got back into the game when Mallow missed a few tackles and made a few basic errors to leave it 2 to 1 at half time.
In the second half Mallow scored three more tries through Brid O’Sullivan who touched down for two to give her a well deserved hat trick. Not to be outdone her sister Catriona O Sullivan also scored a great try in the corner having done all the work. Clonmel scored two more to leave the final score 5 tries to three
Mallow were best served by their two other Munster representatives Catriona O Sullivan and Megan McCarthy at scrum half. Megan’s speed at the base of the scrum really sets up the game going forward, Aisling Glynn at outside centre was in exceptional form always looking for the gap. New girl Julia Jarosch had a great first cap for the U18 girls she ran well and tackled well, she can be proud of her performance. Jessica Hurrell just back from injury is slowly getting back to the pace of the game. Amanda McCarthy played a captain’s role being there when needed. All in all a good display with two matches left in the league
Team was as follows; Mary Kate Glynn,Aisling Glynn, Emma Coakley, Amanda McCarthy, [captain] Megan McCarthy, Catriona O Sullivan, Jessica Hurrell, Siobhan Lane, Brid O Sullivan, Julia Jarosch, Maeve Aherne.

U14 Mallow V St Mary’s

This was a David and Goliath story with the Mallow girls being the smaller and faster team and St Mary’s fielding a strong and physical side. However the Mallow girls were not going to let anything get in their way, they have had a few good results going their way in more recent times, a draw against Shannon and ran in eleven tries against Crosshaven last week has put them in the right frame of mind. This team is led by Julia Lane and she controlled this game from beginning to end, she ran everything, she has two great feet and tackled her hearth out. Julia was ably assisted by the two Maires, Maire O Callaghan playing her first game at scrum half was exceptional and Maire O Connell gathered everything in the centres. It was Maire O Callaghan who was first to pounce from the kick off she side stepped four players to touch down in the corner. Mallow also added the second try when Julia Lane beat three players and with a quick flick back on the inside found Eadoinn O Riordan who raced away to score. St Marys got a try back before half time when the Mallow girls just did not put in their tackles. To close out the first half, live wire, Irene Herlihy side stepped through the entire team to score her customary one try per match. The match was still poised at three tries to one and after the break Mallow knew their was a game to be won
St Marys came out with intent and a few errors by Mallow gave them easy tries so the game stood at three a piece. In the last five minutes the lighter Mallow team with their faster players and some brilliant footwork saw Maire O Connell side step her way through and was never touched to score. Soon after Maire O Callaghan who was in great form, copied her partner and a decent lead was again established. The final whistle went to great joy from the Mallow players and supporters.
The unsung heroes in this game were the players who put in the hard graft, Heather McAulliffe and Alleysa O Connnor battled endlessly and did the right thing when they had possession, they allowed the backs to play the open game their coach wanted them play. There is great confidence in this team their running is exceptional their handling is first class and they have benefitted from their consistent training. They now travel to Shannon in two weeks time and I think they deserve a rest after this game
Team Heather McAulliffe, Irene Herlihy,Alleysa O Connor, Allana France, Maire O Callaghan, Maire O Connell, Julia Lane [ captain] Eadoinn O Riordan, Alice Lane,
