Fermoy Women’s Update

The Fermoy Ladies Rugby Team got the New Year off to a fantastic start this weekend with a win away to Waterford City.

Bad weather had hampered progress before Christmas but the ladies were unfazed by the break and were in top form on the day, demonstrating their continued progress with an emphatic final score of 56-0. Fermoy and Waterford had strong numbers meaning both sides fielded full teams of 15.

Scrum half Lisa Sheehan opened the scoring in the first half. A pick off the back of the scrum by No. 8 Trisha Carroll, quickly popped to Lisa resulted in a great first try. Sheehan then converted to bring the score to 7-0 early on. A fantastic run of play and sheer determination by the ladies resulted in outhalf, and captain, Aine O’Regan diving for the line for our second try of the day. Unfortunately, the conversion dropped short. The ladies battled on, however, and an error by Waterford resulted in a penalty close to their own line. A quick tap and go penalty by No. 2, Louise Sullivan resulted in another great try with Sullivan touching down. Again the conversion failed to reach the mark. The ladies were in attacking mode once again after the restart with a lovely bit of play by a very strong back line resulting in a first ever try for Sandra Power who touched down in the corner. A fabulous run by full back Marian Twomey from the half way line resulted in another try for our ladies bringing the first half to a close with a score of 27-0.

The second half got off to an excellent start with another try under the posts for Aine O’Regan, who also converted. The back line were in flying form as No. 13, Louise Buttimer touched down following a lovely run of play. This was followed by yet another unstoppable run by Marian Twomey to bring the score to 44-0. The forwards were not to be outshone, however, as they battled on resulting in another score, this time for No. 7 Danielle O’Riordan following a well timed pass from Louise Sullivan. It seemed the writing was on the wall for Waterford when sub Clodagh Lacey powered through with a beautifully timed intercept to score between the posts, followed by a conversion. Final score in Waterford, 56-0 to our ladies.
