Van Den Heever Arrives

Gerhard van den Heever finally touched down in Cork today to join Munster on a two-year contract.

The South African signed for Munster in July but stayed with Western Province as they unsuccessfully attempted to defend the Currie Cup, they were beaten 33-19 by the Sharks in the final 10 days ago.

The winger will begin training with the Munster squad next Tuesday and is looking forward to getting started.

“For the last month I have been really excited to get here, it’s a great new experience for me to join Munster and be part of their pride, tradition and honour.

“I’m hoping to start training on Tuesday and settle into the team, I just want to get stuck into it and be part of the success that they have here at Munster.”

Van den Heever made his Super Rugby debut with the Bulls at the age of just 20 and enjoyed a highly successful two years there, winning the Super Rugby competition in 2009.

He made the move to the Stormers in 2011 and has played provincial rugby for the Blue Bulls and Western Province, winning the Currie Cup with both sides.

The 24-year-old will be helped to settle in Munster by fellow countrymen CJ Stander, who he played with at Blue Bulls, and BJ Botha.

The versatile back can play on the wing, at full-back or in the centre.
