Limerick World Club 7s Draw Unveiled

Munster will face one of the top rugby 7s sides in the world, Fijian outfit Daveta, in Thomond Park next month as the clubs were drawn in the same pool for the Limerick World Club 7s.

The draw was revealed last night at the tournament’s launch event in King John’s Castle, as Limerick prepares to stage an exhilarating rugby 7s festival with a selection of top clubs from northern and southern hemispheres battling it out for supremacy in the first ever World Club 7s event in Ireland, taking place on August 9th and 10th.

The Limerick World Club 7s Festival also introduced its main theme of ‘Superheroes’ at the launch. Just like most 7s festivals, the attraction is not just super-fast, super-exciting rugby, but also cosmopolitan international flair, coupled with a sense of entertainment and fun. With colour, cheerleaders and crazy costumes commonplace, dressing up at 7s festivals is actively encouraged, and this year’s Superheroes theme gives plenty of lee-way and inspiration for clever, funny and interesting costume ideas!

Munster Rugby are creating an exciting 7s team under the stewardship of former Munster and Ireland 7s player Colm McMahon, and the side have been drawn in Pool C against Fiji’s famous Daveta side in the last match of day one at Thomond Park. The draw for Pool C also sees USA face Russia with San Francisco taking on Moscow.

Pool A will see New Zealand’s Auckland Rugby play South Africa’s Vodacom Blue Bulls, New York City 7s and England’s mighty Saracens.

While in Pool B former Leinster coach, Michael Cheika will be welcomed back to Ireland as his Waratahs side face South Africa’s DHL Western Province, Vancouver and Stade Français.

With the event due to be staged in Thomond Park for five years, up to 2018, Pool matches will take place on Saturday, with the winning club emerging from Sunday's play-off games.

While these 7s players may not be able to leap buildings in a single bound, some of them come pretty close, and these games will certainly display their own range of extraordinary powers and exceptional skills. On the pitch as well as in the crowd there may be an Avenger or two, a Punisher, an Iron Man, a Captain Marvel, maybe even a Captain America!

John Cantwell, Stadium Director at Thomond Park commented,

“Thomond Park Stadium is delighted to be hosting the inaugural Limerick World Club 7s Tournament on the 9th and 10th of August. This international tournament and associated festival provides a perfect opportunity to create a legacy event that will deliver significant economic and social benefits year on year and also 1promote Limerick and the region in a very positive manner. It is a prime example of what can be achieved by private and public stakeholders working together to achieve a common goal supported by sporting bodies such as Munster Rugby and IRFU. I would encourage everybody, both young and old, to experience this unique event and enjoy its wonderful mixture of top class sport and entertainment.”

Thomond Park is preparing for the festival of world class 7s rugby, with a full schedule of 14 minute matches, along with entertainment running throughout the two days. Together with constant action on and off the pitch, this year’s Superhero theme will also mean that fans who get dressed up as their favourite superhero will be in with a chance of winning spot prizes on each day. Thomond Park will also introduce its first ever dedicated ‘Family Zone’ with specially designed activities for children throughout the day.
