Latest Pics: Pre-Season Week 1

A mixture of Senior, Academy and Sub-Academy players are taking part in pre-season training this week, under the stewardship of new Head Coach Anthony Foley who began his new role on Monday.

With those who travelled on Ireland and Emerging Ireland tours last month still to return to the fold, the returning players spent Monday in their respective centres of Cork and Limerick, each undergoing medical and fitness tests to gauge their current physical condition in comparison to the end of last season. Players will then be retested every four weeks, however in the interim players will be monitored on a daily basis, before, during and after training. Speed and power training was next on Monday’s agenda, after which players hit the gym for a lower body strength session.

Tuesday saw the first joint session of Cork and Limerick based players under Head Coach Anthony Foley take place at CIT. A team meeting was held in the morning in which Foley introduced some of the new additions to his backroom staff including the returning Mick O’Driscoll and Jerry Flannery. Backs and forwards then spent the rest of Tuesday morning rotating between some light handling and skills sessions on the field, and upper body strength in the gym. While in the afternoon, the glaring summer sun made"" shuttle runs a sweaty and energy zapping affair as the squad commenced cardiovascular training for the coming year.

Pre-season continued in the players respective centres yesterday and today, ahead of another joint session at UL on Friday. Strength, speed, agility, flexibility and fat loss are just some of the areas to be covered under the guidance of the Munster Strength and Conditioning staff.

On the injury front there was positive news for Cathal Sheridan (forearm), Mike Sherry (knee) and Stephen Archer (neck) as they all commenced pre-season training on Monday.

Dave O’Callaghan (pictured on right) is also progressing well following on from his knee surgery in February and he returns running this week.

While Barry O’Mahony, who underwent knee surgery at the end of last season, joins Peter O’Mahony and Duncan Casey (both shoulder) as they follow their tailored rehabilitation programmes.

Having represented Leinster A last season, new signing Martin Kelly (prop) began training this week, as did UL Bohemian hooker Kevin O’Byrne who began a Training contract with the province this week.
