Academy Attend IRUPA Media Workshop

Earlier today, members of the Greencore Munster Rugby Academy attended an IRUPA Media Workshop. In developing player engagement with media and fans, the event afforded players the opportunity to practice interview preparation and technique.

With media engagements now an inevitability for all professional players in the modern game, the workshop, conducted by sports communication consultant Kieran File, combined theory with practical exercises in generating greater media awareness for younger players.

Attending the event today, Derval O’Rourke, IRUPA Player Development Manager for Munster said, “In sport, it’s not just about performing. There are a lot of different aspects to being a sportsperson nowadays and these guys will have to deal with the media at some stage.
""
“It’s about giving players strategies to deal with situations off-field. With rugby being so popular and with players being in the public eye so much, you want them to be able to articulate their feelings in a really good way and be happy with how they come across. Sometimes, all the public will see of them – outside of when they are playing – is those few seconds when they are interviewed so you want them to make the most of that.”

Throughout the workshop, practical role-plays saw players broken up into pairs to interview each other and, in providing insight into the approaches of both parties in an interview, players were encouraged to alternate the roles of interviewer and interviewee.

""With such active participation and enthusiasm from Academy members, Kieran File was very pleased with the progress made during today’s workshop, “I’m always pushing for teams to start media education earlier and earlier, and it’s great the Academy guys got that opportunity today. Media plays such a big role in the professional game so it’s good younger players are aware of what they’re likely to encounter.

“There was a lot of engagement today and that really was crucial. As well as taking part in our practical exercises where they interviewed each other, they also took the opportunity to raise questions and provide little bits of insight as to how they were feeling about these situations. We could then provide them with feedback and it’s better to do that now, rather than have them wondering what to do in the middle of a live pitch side interview.”
