North Cork Festival of Rugby

Mallow RFC are pleased to announce, that they will once again be holding the North Cork Festival of Rugby on the weekend of August 31st & September 1st.

Mallow RFC are pleased to announce, that they will once again be holding the North Cork Festival of Rugby on the weekend of August 31st & September 1st. This festival was first held last year & proved to be a great success. This year the festival has doubled in size.

The men’s teams play for the Jimmy Carey Memorial Cup. Jimmy Carey was a well known Mallow player playing with the club in the fifties & sixties & this cup is named in his honour. Four local clubs competed for this cup last year, Charleville, Kanturk, Old Christians & Mallow. Mallow were victorious, however they will face strong competition if they are to repeat the feat as the number of teams has been increased from 4 to 8. The format remains the same with the focus being on developing fast running rugby by playing a non-kicking game. This hopefully should lead to “Barbarian style” rugby over this weekend.

Perhaps the most exciting development in the increase in the number of women’s teams from two to four. Top level women’s players will be competing in this tournament over the two days. An invitation Golden Oldies side is also due to travel to this event. With this increase in the number of games (28 games in total over the weekend) Mallow RFC will be using both of their pitches at the Town Park & Parkadillane over the two days. Full details of all teams taking part will be announced shortly however it is certain that this will prove to be an excellent sports & family weekend promoting the very best of Munster rugby.
