Horgan Injury Will Require Surgery

Anthony Horgan underwent a scope to determine the extent of the damage and as a result he will require surgery to correct an unstable shoulder joint.

Munster team manager Jerry Holland confirmed today that Munster squad member Anthony Horgan will require surgery for a shoulder injury and could be out of action for up to six months.

Holland explained Medical advice is that the likely recovery period is six months. He went on to say. On a personal level I am very disappointed for Anthony, the injury coming as it does at the start of the season, and just a short time after a broken hand forced his withdrawal from the Heineken Cup final. But I will say, that knowing the type of character he is, his resilience and determination will see him back at the top level and I look forward to that. The question of Horgan s inclusion in Munster s Heineken Cup squad was dealt with by Holland when he said, As is the case with both Paul O Connell and David Wallace, a decision on whether Horgan will be registered for the Heineken Cup will not be made until the deadline date of September 20th.“

Munster coach Alan Gaffney was understandably disappointed with the news and he said. It s a real shame for Anthony. I was expecting a big season for him at both provincial and international level but now that will have to be put on hold. Of course it s a big blow from my point of view to lose such a quality player but the main priority is the player himself and I wish him a speedy recovery. “

Gaffney attempted to remain upbeat despite recent developments that have seen Paul O’Connell and David Wallace effectively removed from his squad. Now they are joined on the long term injury list by a third front-line player making the coach’s job all the more difficult. In addition he is left to prepare for the season with only a partial squad because of national squad commitments. Seventeen of his squad were in Poland for two weeks and this week those players are on down time. Next week and the week after 10 of the squad will be committed to the Ireland squad while John O’Neill (Ankle) and Martin Cahill (Groin) are both out injured.

So with the seasonal opener (v Bristol Shoguns) less than a week away, Gaffney finds himself without 16 of his original squad of 29.
