Captain Jim Williams will miss Munster’s Celtic League clash with Ulster in Ravenhill on Friday with a knee injury and in his absence the side will be captained by Mick Galwey.

Other changes in the Munster pack see Marcus Horan returning to the front row after missing the Swansea game due to international commitments, with Donncha O’Callaghan also back into the side but this time being given a run in the number six jersey, a move facilitated by Eddie Halvey taking over at number 8 in place of the absent Williams.

Commenting on the changes coach Alan Gaffney said, “Jim’s injury is not too serious, a little swelling on the knee, but at this stage of the season we’re not prepared to take chances. We’ve selected Frank (Sheahan) although he is with the national squad and we’ll just have to wait and see on that one.” The selection of O’Callaghan at six gives Gaffney the opportunity to see what he describes as an outstanding prospect in action, ” I think he has all the natural attributes to be an outstanding six, so we’ll give him a go there,” said Gaffney, and with Denis Leamy on the other side of the scrum, Gaffney is gambling on youth, in a game he expects to be as tough as they’ve played this season. ” Denis was outstanding on his debut against Swansea and his reward is that he retains his place. He’s earned it.”

“I don’t think it needs to be said what sort of a task we face. It is never easy to get anything out of Ravenhill and we can expect a capacity crowd to get right behind Ulster. They have the Indian sign over us this past while and it’s a game they know they must win. So all in all, I’d say we’re right up against it.”
