The Brian Fitzgerald Memorial Shield

Date: Sunday 27th April 2003

Venue: Thomond Park

Start Time: 9.45am

Registration Time: 9.15am

The above invitational Blitz originated with the family of the late Mr. Brian Fitzgerald asking St.Mary’s RFC to organise a memorial event in his honour. Brian played rugby with St.Mary’s and Thomond and was selected for trial with the Munster junior team. Brian devoted his life to his family and to his passion for sport and in particular body building. Brian as you are aware was murdered as a result of his occupation. He was the head of security at a well known night club in Limerick. It was his determination to keep the club safe and drug free that led to his murder. It is therefore very fitting that the competition organised in his memory involves young people. This competition will mean a lot to his family, his community and his club.

St.Mary’s RFC approached the North Munster Mini Rugby Committee requesting support for this competition. All members of the committee were totally supportive and we intend to have this competition in Brian’s memory for the Under 12 age group every year.

It most appropriate that we can give the Under 12’s a competitive blitz at the conclusion to their season, as they will enter a competitive structure the following season with the Under 13’s. The following thirteen clubs in North Munster have been invited to attend: Bruff, Ennis, Garryowen, Kilrush, Newcastlewest, Old Crescent, Richmond, St.Marys’, St. Senans’, Shannon, Thomond, UL Bohemians and Young Munster.

We look for ward to an enjoyable day with all clubs, supporters, coaches and parents once again entering into the spirit of Mini Rugby and its ethos.
