Midleton to Create History

Midleton will create history on Sunday when they take their place in the final of the Munster Senior Cup against Shannon at Musgrave Park.

Midleton will create history on Sunday when they take their place in the final of the Munster Senior Cup.

The East Cork club will be competing in the final for the first time in their short history (they were founded in 1967) and will face formidable opponents in the shape of Shannon, holders of the trophy and long odds on to complete four-in-a-row and claim their 15th title But Midleton will face the challenge with their customary commitment and their chances will be boosted by the presence of Jason Holland who will partner player/coach Damon Urlich at half-back behind a pack that includes the Cullinane brothers, Patrick and Miceal, in the second row.

To reach this stage, Midleton have had to take the hard road, starting off with a win over UL Bohemians in Thomond Park and then having to travel again, this a little closer to home, to Musgrave Park in Cork where they came away with 28-19 win over Sunday s Well.

Shannon beat Thomond 18-10 to reach Sunday s final and they re likely to start with the same fifteen that includes Mick Galwey who will be hoping to win his 10th Munster Senior Cup medal. Joining Galwey in the Shannon line-up will be his Munster colleagues, Colm McMahon, James Blaney, Trevor Hogan and Eddie Halvey.

Midleton: Dave Hurley; Morgan Colbert, Brian Morris, Damien Smyth, Kieran Walls; Jason Holland, Damon Urlich; Phillip Smyth, David Lee, Kevin Brierley; Patrick Cullinane, Miceal Cullinae (capt); Garvin Lynch, Simon Buckley, Brian O Connell.

Shannon: John Lacey; Colm Mc Mahon, Eoin Cahill. Andrew Thompson, David O Donovon; Niall McNamara, Frank McNamara; Frankie Roche, James Blaney, Tony Buckley; Mick Galwey. Trevor Hogan; Tom Hayes, Eddie Halvey, Dave Quinlan (capt)
