Hot favourites Shannon duly won their 15th Munster Senior Cup title with a 22-13 winover Midleton in Musgrave Park and in the process completed four in a row which also presented Mick Galwey with his 10th Munster senior Cup medal.

But to complete these records Shannon enjoyed more than a fair share of luck. They led 12-6 at half time thanks to tries from captain David Quinlan and Eddie Halvey – a half in which Jason Holland spent 10 minutes in the sin-bin – but their star studed side were given an awesome going-over by the second division club.

Then in the second half Shannon received their biggest let off when Midleton looked certain to score a try that would have made it 12-11 with the conversion to follow, only for the ball to be lost in the tackle. Midleton continued to press but lady luck frowned on them again when an interception left Colm McMahon with a run the length of the field for the try that essentially decided the outcome.
