Tag rugby’s summer season in Limerick kicks-off this Saturday. A warm-up event will take place at Garryowen’s Dooradoyle ground from 2pm and there is no entry fee for teams for this warm-up event.

More than 3,500 rugby enthusiasts are expected to participate in the annual tag rugby summer leagues in Limerick which begin later this month. With a 30% increase in participation numbers from last year, it is oficially the fastest growing adult team summer sport in Ireland.

Garryowen RFC will host the tag matches on Wednesday and Thursday nights starting on May 28. It is a great sporting opportunity for both men and women who want to stay fit, meet new people and participate in one of the most exciting challenges around. Managed by the Irish Tag Rugby Association (ITRA) under the auspices of the IRFU, there is a mixed social league for men and women.

Teams must have four men and three women on a 7-a-side team. And the season, which runs into July, also includes a men’s Super League for current rugby players from U20’s, junior and senior adult rugby teams. Each game lasts for 20 minutes a side. A hooter goes for play to begin and each team lines up. The hooter calls half time and full time for each match.

Each player wears a Velcro belt with two tags. Tackling is achieved through the removal of the Velcro ‘tag’. In the mixed teams, men score one point per try and women three.”

ITRA supplies all equipment for the teams on the night.

Registration for a team costs 420 plus VAT, which works out at 4.50 per night for each player. The All Ireland-playoffs are held in St Mary’s RFC, Dublin on Saturday, July 26.
