Munster Youths shocked a very fancied Leinster Team last Saturday in the Interprovincial Championship in the build up to the Semi finals in Portlaoise on Saturday 18th October next.

The Youths who were playing away from home got off to a resounding start when the Forwards put immediate pressure on the Leinster pack from the kick off. The Leinster number five knocked the ball on to give Munster the put in. The Munster winger Kevin Boyle was pushed into touch on the Leinster ten yard line and second row Sean Ryan won the opposition line out to give Munster the driving maul which led to Sean Fitzgerald scoring the opening try in the third minute. Leinster replied within ten minutes to level the score five all.

On the twentieth minute Munster scored their second try after the pack piled on the pressure again in the Leinster half. A line out on the twenty two metre line saw Ben Nagle gather the ball with the pack driving to the Leinster line. Captain and prop Dave Ryan got the touch down which Kevin Doyle converted. Munsters third try came just before the half time whistle when Full back Shane Moloney gathered a high ball inside his own twenty two to crash through the Leinster centres, linking up with winger Doyle who again came close to the Leinster line but was forced into touch.

Leinsters line out was again disrupted and the Munster flanker Ciaran Horgan took the ball at the back of the line out to crash over under the posts. Doyle again converted to bring the half time scores to 19:5 in Munsters favour.

Both sides displayed entertaining running rugby but it was all Leinster in the second half. Munster defended gallantly for much of the half and made some promising drives into the Leinster twenty two but the Leinster players desperate to maintain their good form finally broke the Munster defence for two unconverted tries in normal time to bring the scores to 19: 15.

It looked as if the Munster Youths had pulled this one off but were dealt a lethal blow when the Leinster winger scored in the corner flag in the fourth minute of injury time. Some outstanding performances from the Munster Players and in particular Hooker Liam Bannon whose line out throwing was exceptional on the day.
