Munster Face Stern French Test

Munster have reached at least the semi-finals of the last four Heineken Cup tournaments, including the 2000 and the 2002 finals, but they face a demanding French test in Bourgoin on Saturday in their bid to make a flying start this time.

“Bourgoin are a very physical and big side – from what we have seen of them, they are largely a forward orientated side,” said coach Alan Gaffney.

“They are extremely powerful in the set pieces and maul and are, to some extent, much like last season’s Heineken Cup finalists Perpignan.

“But Bourgoin, who got through to the French Cup final and have some excellent form on the board, also have attacking backs and they will spin the ball. It is going to be very tough for us over there.

“We are still a bit rusty – which is to be expected – and our preparation has been limited due to the World Cup.

“But our performance against Cardiff Blues last weekend was a big plus, the team did exceptionally well.

“However, we know it is going to be a lot tougher than that in Bourgoin. Every match you play in France is a real challenge and this will be no exception.”
