The Coca Cola Schools Senior Cup sees the big guns enter the competition this week with all four quarter final ties to be decided over the next few days.
It starts with two games in Limerick this Thursday, involving the big Limerick derby between Ard Scoil R s and St Munchin’s at Thomond Park and across in Dooradoyle Rockwell face Glenstal Abbey.
Ard Scoil R s after their great success in winning the Junior Cup last season, will be hoping to make it to the final. They supplied five players to the successful winning Munster side and will be no push over. The Corbally side did not have a big representation on the Munster side this season, but they have had success this season, with their Under 16’s retaining the Bowen Shield and the Barry Cup will spend another 12 months at the College, after their 27-12 win over Rockwell in last Friday’s Final.
Glenstal renew rivalry with Rockwell, where the East Limerick side will be hoping to go one better than when the sides met two seasons ago, when the Tipperary side won a closely contested encounter.
Meanwhile in Cork, P.B.C. and C.B.C. meet in a repeat of last season’s Final at Musgrave Park on Sunday next, which Christians won 11-8. The sides met twice already this season, with each side recording a victory. The Sydney Hill School defeated their neighbours in a dramatic Barry Cup tie with a last minute penalty. The holders are probably the most experienced team in the competition, with several survivors from last season’s triumph and are many people’s fancy to win it again.
The following day, Bandon Grammar’s busy season continues, when they take on Crescent Comprehensive at a Cork venue. Bandon caused a major upset last week with that 12-8 triumph over Newtown in the Mungret Cup Final. The Limerick side will not be underestimating their West Cork opponents, while they view this tie as ideal preparation for a Semi-Final meeting with the either Ard Scoil R s or St. Munchin’s.
