Heineken Cup – Additional Players

In keeping with the regulations set down by ERC Ltd whereby a club may nominate two additional players and replace a front-row player, Munster have added, Alan Quinlan, Mike Prendergast and Ross Callaghan to the Heineken Cup squad for the knock-out stages of the competition. Both Quinlan and Prendergast have made good recovery from their respective injury. Quinlan is due to see his specialist on March 26th with Prendergast’s appointment a week later. It is anticipated that following that consultation, both players will be given the all clear to resume light contact. Ross Callaghan replaces Eugene McGovern who has a knee ligament injury that will likely require surgery and he is ruled out for the rest of the season. Callaghan, a former Munster Schools and U21 player is currently playing AIL rugby with Garryowen. Although Heineken Cup player eligibility rules allow the possibility of Munster including additional players from outside the province, this option was precluded by Celtic League competition rule (Rule 6, Para 6.4/6.5). Munster have been advised by IRFU and Celtic League that if they include a player from another province in their Heineken Cup squad for the knock-out stages, then that player will not be eligible to play in remaining Celtic League games for his ‘own’ province.
