Sunday is the blue ribbon day in Munster Club rugby with the playing of the Munster Senior Cup Final between Garryowen and Shannon at Thomond Park with a 3.00 kick off.

One of these two clubs has been on the winner’s rostrum every year since 1991, with the exception of the 1994 final. In this the 113th final, Garryowen have won the trophy on thirty-five occasions with their first success going back to 1889.

Shannon will be looking to win the trophy for the sixteenth time and also set a record of becoming the first club to win five consecutive finals. Normally a final between theses two sides would attract a near full house to Thomond Park, but such is the lack of interest in the club game that it is unlikely to attract such a great crowd.

Shannon will start as favourites to retain the trophy, but their defeat and probably the manner of the defeat, by Cork Constitution in the AIL last week will have brought them back to earth and Coach Geoff Moylan will make sure that his charges will not under estimate the task in hand.

Garryowen caused a big upset in the semi-final defeating Cork Constitution 16-11 in the semi-final at Musgrave Park and followed that up with great result away to Blackrock last week, a tie they won 34-25 and this young side will feel that they can cause an upset and end Shannon’s great run in the competition.
