Plenty of drama in opening round of the Munster Senior Cup as no change in Junior League
22nd November 2004 By Munster Rugby
Clonakilty have moved to the top of the Third Division of the All Ireland League, as Thomond and U.C.C. snatch late winners in the Munster Senior Cup
Two tries each from Noel O Sullivan and Shay O Donovan and three conversions from Gary Cribb earned Clonakilty a 26-3 win away to Ballina and this result has seen them move a point ahead of Greystones at the top of the table in Division 3 of the AIL.
There was great excitement in the Munster Senior Cup with Highfield and Thomond needing extra time to decide the outcome. Thomond led 6-0 at half time and went further ahead with a Stephen Ryan try. Highfield rallied with a try from Mark Canning and two Conor Quaid penalties, the last on the stroke of time. Tom Curran put Highfield ahead in extra time with a try, but a try from Gino Peterson in the final minutes, converted by John Cusack earned Thomond an 18-16 victory.
There was also drama at the Mardyke, where a late conversion earned U.C.C. a 24-22 win over Midleton. The East Cork side led 7-6 at the break and with tries from Conan Sherman, Paul Power and Jason Holland were 22-17 entering the final stages. A late rally by the students saw Dara Fitzgerald go in for a try and Jeremy Manning added the conversion in the final minute.
A Cronan Healy try and a conversion and two penalties from Pat McCarthy gave Cork Constitution a 13-5 victory over Dolphin at Musgrave Park. Darragh O Mahony scored a late try for the home side.
Garryowen defeated U.L. Bohemian 19-9 at Dooradoyle; with scrum half Gerry Hurley getting all the points for the winners a try and four penalties.
Young Munster got the better of Bruff on a 16-8 score line at Kilballyowen Park.
There was no change at the top of the three sections in Division One of the Junior League. Crosshaven defeated Clanwilliam 36-10 and extended their lead to three points over Kilfeacle and Cashel. Cobh Pirates have opened up a four point gap after their 15-10 away win in Thurles, while their nearest rivals Bandon and Old Christians slipped up. Bandon lost away to Tralee 20-7 and Richmond defeated Old Christians 18-11. Youghal defeated Clonmel 11-6 with player-coach Terry Dillon contributing a try and a drop goal. Nenagh closed the gap to a point with a 26-0 win at home to St. Mary s and Skibbereen failed to secure a bonus point in their 17-3 home victory over Castleisland.
Douglas have moved to the top of the Third Division after their 22-15 win at Ballincollig. Mallow moved into second place after their 13-3 home win over Carrick-on-Suir and Presentation preserved their unbeaten record with a 13-0 victory over Kinsale at Rathuard.
