Munster supporters will be guaranteed a minimum of 8,000 tickets for the Heineken Cup quarter final, thanks to the decision by Biarritz to hold the match in the Anoeta Stadium in San Sebastian.
The ERC and FFR visited the Anoeta stadium, Thursday, to ensure that it met with the required standard and ERC later confirmed that the game could go ahead at the 32,000 capacity stadium.
The decision was welcomed by Munster Chief Executive Garrett Fitzgerald when he said, ” It cannot have been easy for them (Biarritz) to decide to move from their own ground. However, to their credit they took into consideration the needs of Munster supporters and in the end they made what was a good rugby decision. I applaud them for that.”
For his part Marcel Martin, President, Biarritz Olympique Pays Basque said: “The decision to move from our home ground was a difficult one, as anyone involved in rugby will understand. ” However, as we considered the satisfaction of supporters as one of our primary objectives, we hope we will be rewarded as a huge crowd behaving in the best rugby tradition.”
Biarritz Olympique plan to create a carnival atmosphere for the European rugby weekend and are inviting Munster fans to view the Leinster v Leicester Tigers and Stade Francais Paris v Newcastle Falcons quarter-finals on big screens in their home ground in Biarritz. Shuttle buses are being organised to transport fans from Biarritz to and from San Sebastian.
With the issue of the venue now decided, tickets for the game are expected to become available in a little over a week’s time. They are likely to be distributed in Munster through the usual sources while the host club will sell their allocation through their own website, www.bo-pb.com
