Ireland 15 Scotland 8

Ireland earned a ninth place finish in the IRB World Championships after defeating Scotland 15-8 on Sunday in Kings Park, Durban. Outstanding for Ireland was captain and full back Robert Kearney who kicked four penalties, with another penalty from Clongowes Fergus McFadden completing Ireland s scoring. Despite Scotland having the lion s share of possession, Ireland led 9-0 at half time. Scotland went in for a try in the 48th minute, when hooker Sean Crombie stormed over. Ireland s forwards exerted sustained pressure on the Scottish defence late in the game, but were unable to add to their tally. Crescent College Comprehensive s Barry O Mahony at wing forward had a fantastic game, making a try saving tackle on Scotland s winger Cammy Johnston.

Top seeds New Zealand were beaten by the host nation, South Africa, with a 20-15 win.
