Junior Rugby Preview

In Junior Rugby, the Garryowen Cup, Evans Cup, Casey Cup, and the O’ Sullivan Cup will all be decided in the coming days.

WEDNESDAY 12th MAY Evans Cup Final: Cashel v Thurles, Cashel, 7.00

FRIDAY 13th MAY Garryowen Cup Final: Cashel v Clanwilliam, Cashel, 7.00

SATURDAY 14th MAY Casey Cup Final: Cashel v Thurles, Waterford, 3.00

SUNDAY 15th MAY O’Sullivan Cup Final: Mallow v Newcastle West, Newport, 2.30

Cashel and Clanwilliam take to the field in opposition on Friday in the final of the Garryowen Cup. The last time the two sides met was on the May weekend, in the final of the Mansergh Cup, with Cashel coming out on top on that occasion on a 12-10 scoreline. One of the big success stories of the season, Cashel will be aiming to defend their title and finish the season on a high, after recording their most impressive season in the history of the club. They won their first ever provincial title when they beat Nenagh Ormond in the final of the Munster Junior Clubs Cup earlier this year. Cashel won their second major trophy of the season, when they defeated Muskerry 23-3 at Thomond Park to lift the Heineken Munster Junior Plate for the third time. Although Evan Lonergan and Kenny Maloney are both nursing injuries, it is expected that they will make a full recovery in time for Friday night s final. Clanwilliam will no doubt be seeking revenge for that defeat, and hoping to claim some silverware before the end of the season. Having met Cashel three times already this season and losing on each occasion on very narrow margins, Clanwilliam will be looking to turn the tables. They will look to players such as prop John Redican, No. 8 Ian Quinlan, exciting winger Bernard O Callaghan and captain Eddie Ryan to lead the way.

It s a busy week for Cashel, who are also appearing in two other finals, incidentally both against Thurles. Cashel seconds play Thurles on Wednesday night in the Evans Cup final, having defeated Nenagh Ormond in the semi final. Having already beaten Thurles 13-6 in the pool games, they will be hoping for a repeat performance. Thurles came into the Evans Cup final having beaten Clonmel, and the sides meet again on Saturday in the final of the Casey Cup, with last year s runners up Thurles hoping to go one better this year.

On Sunday the final of the O Sullivan Cup takes place, with Mallow and Newcastle West both hoping to take the title in the first year of the competition. Mallow had two important away wins in the competition, beating Presentation 32-15 in the quarter final and seeing off the challenge of Douglas in the semi final on a narrow 19-21 score line. With the boot of Jonathon Eather playing a significant role in their wins, Mallow will prove a challenge to Newcastle West. In their path to the final, Newcastle West received two walkovers from Dungarvan and Ballincollig, and defeated Newport in the semi final.
