Monday was rest day for the Lions with golf and clay pigeon shooting on the agenda for those who wished to brave the freezing wind blown rain that swept across the City of Sails area.

But one Lion who forsook the greens of Formosa Country Club at Bechlands was Jonny Wilkinson who opted instead for the squad training ground at Northcote where he tested his techniques in conditions that he is expecting to be the norm as the tour progresses.

On Tuesday the Lions hold the first of two public training sessions at North Harbour Stadium and up to ten thousand are expected to turn up. 20 schoolchildren will be invited to share the final part of the session with the squad.

Meanwhile, ahead of his Lions debut, Paul O’Connell sees Saturday’s game against Bay of Plenty as an opportunity to lay down a marker for Test inclusion.

” You must treat every game as a Test trial. Every time you pull on the jersey you will be on trial for the Tests,” said O’Connel.

“Each time you have to treat it as a trial and play your heart out. I don’t think history is a burden. “People have asked us whether we fear the opposition because it is their one opportunity to play the Lions. But this will be my first chance to play for the Lions.

“There is a huge history there. But I don’t think history is a burden.

“I love hearing that history stuff. When you consider that your name is being put up there with those guys it means you respect the jersey even more.

“It makes you realise what you have in your hands. I am going to be walking out with the number five jersey. It makes you realise how big it is.

“A lot of us are here because we are good at dealing with pressure and a lot of us are here because we react well to pressure.”
