Cashel will take one of the five Munster spots in the inaugural All Ireland Cup following their win over Waterpark.

Cashel to Advance to All Ireland Cup

Following their Round Two ODM Munster Senior Challenge Cup win over Waterpark at the weekend, it was agreed at Monday night s Branch meeting that Cashel will take one of the five Munster spots in the inaugural All Ireland Cup competition. They join Shannon, Garryowen and Dolphin in the Cup, with the fifth place to be decided on Saturday when Cork Constitution play UL Bohemian. The All Ireland Cup is due to take place the weekend of November 12^th, with five Munster teams, six Leinster teams, four Ulster teams and two Connacht teams competing. The draw for the next round of the ODM Munster Senior Challenge Cup is due to take place in early November, with one quarter final due to take place the week ending November 12^th and the semi finals taking place the weekend of November 26^th. The final will take place on New Year s Eve.

Four games in Round Two of the ODM Munster Senior Challenge Cup took place on Saturday, with giant killers Cashel continuing on their run of successes with a 25-10 victory over Waterpark. A rampant Shannon eased through their tie with Midleton, with Mossy Lawlor picking up a hat trick tries for the visitors in their 41-10 win. Dolphin held out for a 19-18 win over Clonakilty at Shannon Vale and Garryowen progress with a 14-3 win over Young Munster at Clifford Park. The results mean that Shannon, Cashel, Dolphin and Garryowen also win a place in the inaugural All Ireland Cup. The final Munster spot in this competition will be decided when Cork Constitution meet UL Bohemian on Saturday October 15^th, in what will surely be a high stakes game. The game is doubling up with their AIL League clash.

Midleton set out their stall early and a tight first half defence prevented the visitors from getting much momentum. Shannon fell behind to Midleton after an 18^th minute penalty from Midleton out half Jeff Hitchmough. However, at the 20 minute mark, Eddie Halvey crossed the line for the visitors, with Andrew Thompson converting. Thompson added a penalty before half time to give Shannon a 10-3 lead at the break. From the restart, the tries came hard and fast. Brian Tuohy scored a try after 5 minutes with Thompson converting. Mossy Lawlor stepped up a gear and got three tries in succession, with Thompson converting two of them to put Shannon out of sight. However, Midleton continued to battle and were rewarded with a try from second row Aidan McCarthy, which Hitchmough converted. For Midleton, it was too late to change the outcome of the game, and Shannon s Tony Buckley finished off with a try, which again Thompson converted. The full time score was 41-10 to Shannon

At Shannon Vale, Barry Keeshan opened the scoring for Dolphin with a penalty after just one minute, and added another after 25 minutes of play. Clonakilty came back and put their first points on the board shortly before half time with a Gary Cribb penalty , only for Dolphin s Ed Mills to score a try just on half time with Keeshan converting to give Dolphin a 13-3 lead at half time. After the break, a rejuvenated Clonakilty reduced the deficit with a penalty from Cribb and a try from Alfie Harte, bringing the score to 13-11 in Dolphin s favour. Two penalties from Keeshan followed only for Clonakilty to come back with a try from John O Donnell, which Cribb converted. With the score 19-18 to Dolphin in the dying minutes of the game, Clonakilty continued to strive for the line. Despite a huge effort, Dolphin held out for the victory, winning 19-18.

Having defeated Sunday s Well in the first round of the ODM Munster Senior Challenge Cup, Cashel had a stunning 25-10 win over Waterpark at Ballinakill in a very well supported game. Especially effective at turning over ball at the breakdown, Cashel played a dynamic brand of rugby that proved too much for Waterpark. Winger Robert Tierney scored a try for the visitors after four minutes, with out half Trevor Breen, who was on the winning Munster Junior Interprovincial team this year, scoring under the posts after 16 minutes. Breen converted himself to give Cashel a 12-0 lead. Adding a penalty after 28 mins, Breen stretched Cashel s lead to 15-0 at half time. Waterpark out their first score on the board after 49 minutes, with out half Scott Leighton kicking a penalty. Breen responded with another penalty, and a minute later Waterpark centre Michael McCahill touched down, with Leighton converting to leave the score 18-10 to Cashel. In injury time, Munster Junior player Ollie McLinchey scored a try for Cashel, with Breen converting to give Cashel a 25-10 victory.

Having had a bye in the first round, Garryowen made a great start to their Munster Senior Challenge Cup campaign at Clifford Park with a 14-3 win over Young Munster. It took Garryowen just seven minutes to score with Kevin Hartigan touching down and Gerry Hurley converting, despite the breezy cross pitch conditions. Young Munster s reply came after 27 minutes, with a penalty kicked by out half Mick Lynch, leaving the score 7-3 to Garryowen at the break. The score remained locked until the 82^nd minute with a try from Garryowen s Paul Neville, which Hurley converted. Young Munster were unable to respond and Garryowen took the victory on a score line of 14-3.
