Ireland U19’s Defeated by France

Ireland U19’s were defeated 26-18 by France in their Division A pool game in the IRB U19 World Championships in Dubai on Sunday.

Ireland 18-26 France

Following their 17-16 win over England mid week to start their campaign on a high, Ireland U19 s suffered a setback on Sunday- going down 26-18 to France.

Despite a very positive start from Ireland, France finished stronger, with a converted try in injury time denying Ireland the bonus point.

Ireland full back Sean Carey claimed the first points of the day, crossing the line for a try after four minutes, as Ireland dominate the opening exchanges. Eight minutes later France replied with a try from captain Jean Monribot from a quickly taken penalty. Four minutes later Morgan Parra added to France s tally with a penalty, with Ireland s Brian Collins claiming one back for Ireland after 19 minutes. However, Parra s 26th minute penalty put France just three points in front at half time, with Ireland still very much in the game.

Brian Collins levelled the score three minutes into the second half, with a magnificent 45-metre penalty. The tit for tat nature of the game continued, with France s winger Yoann Huget claiming the next try after 15 minutes, and Ireland second row Conor McInerney responding with a try of his own eight minutes later. Brian Collins added the conversion to put Ireland 18-16 ahead. The lead was short lived however, as France s full back Mathieu Belie converted a penalty kick just two minutes later. A try from replacement Cyriak Ponnau in injury time, converted by Belie denied Ireland the bonus point, making it two out of two for the French.

Next up for Ireland is a meeting with Samoa on Thursday in Sharjah.

The U19 side includes four players from Munster, including Tommy O Donnell (UL/Clanwilliam) in the back row, hooker Ger Slattery from St. Munchin s College, centre Keith Earls, also from St. Munchin s College and CBC s Ivan Dinneen.
