GARY McCORMICK

Bandon RFC

April Winner

Munster Rugby is delighted to congratulate Gary McCormick from Bandon RFC on becoming the latest recipient of the Right Price Tiles Volunteer of the Month award.

The Right Price Tiles Volunteer Recognition Programme was launched to give clubs and schools the opportunity to acknowledge the significant contribution made by individuals who have developed, promoted and/or advanced the sport of Rugby in the local community and in the province. Through the Volunteer Recognition Programme, Munster Rugby acknowledge, honour and reward these heroes who devote countless hours week in week out, year after year to provide a safe and enjoyable environment at the grassroots of the game. From the kitchen worker to the weekend linesman to the parents that manage and coach under-age sides. True heroes, each one of them.

Nominated by the Underage Committee at Bandon RFC, Gary caught the rugby bug as early at the early age of 8, playing with Ballina RFC in Mayo. He went onto play schools rugby with Wesley College Dublin and played in the Schools Junior Cup Final in 1989, before playing U19 s with Old Wesley and Colleges Rugby with Greenmount College, Antrim.

Its not surprising so, that, when he was forced to stop playing Junior Club Rugby with Bandon RFC due to a back injury in 2004, Gary stayed on to coach the current U14 team (whom he had started to coach in 2003), reaching the U12 s Final of the South Munster Clubs Cup last year. This year he reached the final of the Joe Kidney U13 s cup and the South Munster U14 Semi Final League Play offs.

Gary also runs the texting service for the under age teams, is bagman and medic for the Bandon J1 Team and procured new Jerseys for all under age teams for U8 U18 after getting sponsorship from his employers TESCO Ireland.

Gary has been living in Bandon for the past four years with Jasmine, Jessie, Ben, Sam and Melanie, to whom he got engaged recently!

A spokesperson for Bandon RFC s Underage Committee said Gary s commitment and determination over the past four years both on and off the Rugby pitch and in overcoming his injury has been an inspiration to his players and friends alike.

As the April winner Gary joins Padraic Dolan from Ennis RFC, UL Boh s Neil Kelly, Nenagh Ormond s Pat Whelan, Frank Moynihan of Sunday s Well and Donal O Connell from Richmond RFC who have all won awards this season. All worthy winners and fantastic individuals who have contributed hugely to the sport within their clubs and province.

This programme kicked off in November 2005 and will finish in May 2006, with six individual Volunteer of the Month awards given. The Volunteer Recognition programme is open to any person currently associated with domestic rugby in Munster, in a non-paid capacity at a club, school, college, university or associated affiliate of Munster Branch IRFU.
