Ospreys fly-half Matthew Jones will be sidelined for more than six months after tearing cruciate ligaments in his left leg in last weekend’s Cwmtawe Sevens. He joins David Bishop and Craig Mitchell (knee injuries), Cai Griffiths (shoulder) and Andy Lloyd (ankle) among the Ospreys’ pre-season casualties.

Newport Gwent Dragons coach Paul Turner has enticed Colin Charvis to Rodney Parade, a return that sees the 82 times capped former Wales skipper play for a Welsh club for the first time since 2003 when he was involved with Swansea.

Simon Easterby will once again captain Llanelli Scarlets this season with Dwayne Peel as assistant captain and Stephen Jones designated as attacking co-ordinator. The Scarlets are currently at an army barracks in Exeter for a five-day training camp and go straight from there to Franklin’s Gardens for a game against Northampton, the first of three pre-season games.

Meanwhile, Cardiff Blues, Munster opponents in the Magners League opener do not expect to have New Zealander Ben Blair available for that game but Blair’s compatriot Xavier Rush will almost certainly play in a squad that will likely include Marc Stcherbina, Chris Czekaj, Tom Shanklin, Jamie Robinson, Rhys Williams, Mike Phillips, Nicky Robinson.Gethin Jenkins, Rob Sidoli, Rhys Thomas and Martyn Williams
