The stunning lakeside setting of the Killeens Course at the Killarney Golf & Fishing Club was the venue for the 6th annual Munster Rugby Golf Classic which was held on Monday 28th August last.

With an unprecedented demand for tee times, 60 teams participated in this day long event, with the windy conditions certainly adding to an already challenging course.

The best score of the day came from the Lynch Hotels team of David Byrne (Ballylongford), Tony Tully (Dooradoyle) and Michael Ryan of Birdhill, Co. Tipperary. With a close finish for first place, three teams finished on 52 points, however, Lynch Hotels held the best score on count back and claimed the top prize. In second place came the winners for the last two years- South East Scaffolding, with the team of Vincent Woodlock, Michael Woodlock and PJ Noonan adding to their tremendous record in the competition. Former Munster captain Mick Galwey joined Fionnula MacCurtain McGrath and Dan O Connell on the Munster Sports Travel team to claim third prize. Former international referee Dave McHugh claimed the fourth spot on a score of 51 with team mates Eddie Walsh and Alan Rowe. Charleville RFC s Jimmy Kavanagh, Michael O Halloran and Tony Davern took 5th place, while the Whelan s Contracts team of Edwin Ryan, John McKeogh and Martin O Mahony took sixth place, also on 51 points. Edwin Ryan had even more reason to celebrate after he also won the prize of a week for two people in the Algarve to take part in Munster Sports Travel’s Golf Classic in September in a draw held on the night. The prize was kindly sponsored by Munster Sports Travel.

The longest drive on the 10th hole was won by 20 year old Graeme Dunlea, who is a member of Killarney Golf & Fishing Club and nearest the pin was won by Mike Cafferkey.

With all golf prizes kindly sponsored by Heineken Ireland, the prize giving was held after an evening meal in the club house, with Ralph Murphy, President of the Munster Branch IRFU officiating, along with Munster Rugby star Shaun Payne. Payne had played in the Classic with Bryan Gallwey (Clonakilty) and John Dennis (Aherla) who were the winners of an Irish Examiner competition to play with the Munster star. Munster s Denis Fogarty and Declan Kidney also visited the club house to lend their support.

With all funds generated going towards the development of Youths Rugby in the province, Kerry proved an apt location to hold the Classic, with Youths Rugby in county thriving and continuing to expand.
