Paul O Connell takes over the captaincy of the Munster squad this season from Anthony Foley who held that role for the past two seasons. Speaking about his elevation to captain O Connell said, “It’s a massive honour, it really is. When you look at who has gone immediately before, Axel (Foley), Jimmy (Willams) and Gaillimh (Mick Galwey), three outstanding captains and three real leaders. Tough acts to follow, no question of that. But I m looking forward to it.
He made his debut for Munster in August 2001 and just six months later was called into the Ireland squad before making his international debut against Wales at Lansdowne Road. He marked that occasion with a try but suffered concussion in the course of the game and missed the subsequent matches against England and Scotland.
He missed most of the 2003 international season through injury but returned in March , played in the summer tour of Australia and Tonga/Samoa and has been an ever present in the national side since. His superb form was justly rewarded with selection for the British & Irish Lions and he played in all three Tests against the All Blacks.
