Galbally Off to a Winning Start

Galbally ladies RFC got their second season of rugby off to winning start with an emphatic victory over Athlone Institute of Technology.

Athlone I.T. 0 Galbally 68

This year Munster division 3 joined with Connacht to form the South-West conference.  This saw Galbally travel to Dubarry park on Sunday for their first league game of the season.

Despite the poor weather conditions Galbally opened the scoring in the second minute of the match, with first centre Emma Cleary crossing the line.  Amy Guerin scored next, breaking off the base of the scrum to take advantage of the open blind side.  Second centre Aisling Walters crossed the line next with her first of two tries.  The forwards showed great strength with Catherine Sheedy and Patricia Hennessy adding to the score line.  Out half Siobhan Leahy added her first try of the afternoon before Emma Cleary completed a hat trick of tries ahead of half-time.

The half-time whistle saw both teams running to the stands for shelter from the hail stones.  Galbally took the opportunity to make some changes at half-time and Sinead Hennessy scored the opening try of the second half with her first touch of the ball.  Amy Guerin and Siobhan Leahy then ran in their second tries of the match to bring the tally to 12 tries.  Amy Guerin put on a fine display of kicking to convert 4 of the tries, despite the strong wind and driving rain to leave the final score 68 – 0.

The ladies train on Tuesday at 7.30 and Friday at 8.30 in Galbally RFC and would like to invite anybody interested in joining them for fun, fitness and plenty of craic to come along.

Team: Sharon O’Halloran, Marissa Hayes, Catherine Sheedy, Julieanne O’Brien, Patricia Hennessy, Emily Kenny, Michelle Fitzpatrick, Amy Guerin, Siobhan Leahy, Rachel Sheedy, Emma Cleary, Fiona Neenan, Aiofe O’Brien, Aisling Walters, Sinead Hennessy.
