Semi Final Draw
26th January 2009 By Munster Rugby
Details of this year’s Heineken Cup semi finals will be revealed tomorrow when the draw for the penultimate stage is made at Murrayfield.
ERC Chairman Jean Pierre Lux will conduct the draw that will decide the semi-final pairings and in what country those games will be played.
Munster have qualified for the semi finals in the past on seven occasions but only once – 2004 – been favoured with a home country draw. That year they were beaten by the eventual winners London Wasps in Lansdowne Road and although they played again the following year in Lansdowne Road, they were the ‘away’ side to hosts Leinster.
Quarter Finalists: Cardiff v Toulouse: Munster v Ospreys: Harlequins v Leinster: Leicester Tigers v Bath.
Of the last eight only Leinster and Harlequins have never played each other in the Heineken Cup. Cardiff and Toulouse met at the quarter final stage last season, the French side winning comfortably 41-17 in Toulouse while the sides also met in the inaugural Heineken Cup final, Toulouse winning 21-18 after extra time.
Leicester Tigers and Bath met in the 2006 quarter final played at the Walkers Stadium with Bath winning 15-12 and Munster played Neath Swansea Ospreys, as they were then known, in the Pool stages of the 2004/2005 season.
Munster will be represented at the draw by their Backs coach Jason Holland and centre Rua Tipoki.
