Supporters Guide to Biarritz

Munster’s local resident’s have been busy again, this time providing information about Biarritz.

Les 100 Marches Bar – this Bar is new since Munster fans were last here. It overlooks the Cote des Basques and has terrific views views over the sea to Spain. Always very busy but service is good. Pricy with beers at 3€ for a glass. Snacks also served. Open around 8 am and closes well after midnight. Good buzz, especially if weather is good..
Bibi Beaurivage celebrations. By happy chance this weekend coincides with annual celebrations in the “Bibi Beaurivage” Quartier, centred on rue d’Espagne. There will be lots of activity and locals’ outdoor lunch (in the car park beside the 100 Marches Bar) on one of the weekend days. Music and life will abound.
Les Terrasses Restaurant and Pizzeria, which greatly welcomed Munster fans last time is still reasonable value for money in the present financial crisis. It is located to the left of the Radisson Hotel. Tomas, the pizza and pasta chef loves speaking English and, for people of small appetites, can be persuaded to cook smaller portions. (Just mention
Moira O’Brien).
Toulouse v Leinster match will be on French TV, not Spanish and can be seen in many locations in town – not so in San Sebastian where only football is shown, plus bull fighting. Possibilities are The Red Café in rue Victor Hugo; Restaurant Le Caritz, 14 rue Port Vieux (famous French rugby player, Pascal Ondart’s Bar); Newquay Bar in Place Clemenceau; Le Vestiaire in rue Gambetta (which is fairly small); and (we think) Le Bistrot de Haou in rue Gambetta. It also serves good food but you can just go in for drinks. Le Kirola, avenue Foch; Les Colombes, ave Edouard V11, near La Mairie; Les Coupoles, Place Clemenceau.
The PMU Bar, Ongi Ethorri in rue d’Espagne is welcoming but might not show the match if the racing is still on. Patron is our friend, Georges.
Best way to get to San Sebastian from Biarrittz is train to Hendaye and then Topo – cheap and takes about 35 minutes. A stop underneath Stade Anoeta, called ‘Anoeta‘. But see the special transport arrangements for Munster fans on the website of the Biarritz Tourist Office below.
In San Sebastien, the Old Town especially, there are loads of tapas bars. You just have to fight your way in and attempt to try two or three different ones just for the experience. Fish restaurants near La Concha (the bay) are also good.
For those arriving at Biarritz airport, the best way into town is by STAB Bus No.6 – direction Quartier de Gaz [not Bayonne]. It goes in both directions from the same stop. The No.9 bus into Biarritz might also be running.

Reminder:
Biarritz supports its team but many restauranteurs and Bar Owners (not to mention the shops) feel that they lose trade because the match takes place in Spain. You will be made welcome. Everyone seems to know about Munster, not least after their last visit in 2005!
