Big Weekend For Leamy

Big Weekend For Leamy

It’s a big weekend for Denis Leamy what with leading Munster tonight in the Magners League and then roaring on Tipperary in the All Ireland Final tomorrow

But first off for the man who has so impressed on his return from injury is tonight's hugely important opener against the Italian newcomers.

“Yeh we've had a good pre-season, had one last year, didn't get us what we set out to achieve, so enough said.”

That's Leamy's take on the start to last season and he's taking nothing for granted after two good pre-season  performances ahead of what he identifies as 'the game that could set the tone for us.”

“We did fine against Leicester (Tigers) and Gloucester but this one (Aironi) is entirely different. It's the first competitive game and a huge step up on what's gone before.  We couldn't have had better preparation with those games but this one will be a step up again. We'd have huge respect for them. They have an international front five and present a huge physical physical challenge along with Nick Williams at number eight.”

Leamy doesn't for one minute try to conceal his admiration for his ex-colleague who could determine the outcome of the up-front battle – if Leamy allows !

“I'd have huge respect for him. Only had the pleasure of playing with him a few times because both himself and me had our injuries. But, look he's weighing in at over 120kgs and a really good footballer to boot. He has it all, will be a huge influence. He'll have the inside line on us, but the just another factor we've to deal with.”

And for the third successive time the Cashel man leads Munster and it's a role he takes seriously, ” It's a huge honour, no disrespect, but doing it in this game is special. It's bigger now. Fantastic. No I don't feel any extra pressure, I'm part of a squad, have  a part to play, I know I have the support around me. So no it's an honour simple as that.”

And for Leamy, a proud Munster Tipperyman, his wish for the sporting'weekend ?  “A win on Saturday and a one point in over the Cats wouldn't be a bad weekend would'it ?”
