Trip to Kilbarry beckons

Our First XV will travel to Kilbarry to take on Waterford City in a pre-season friendly this Friday evening at 8pm. The squad has put in a hell of an effort over the past two months or so, doing a lot of gym work as well as working on set plays and one or two new moves at set-piece time and in open play (confidential of course at the time of writing!). With the assistance of Danny and Shaun at training over the summer, skipper David Kiersey has put in a tremendous effort since assuming the brief and deserves great credit for the work he's put in up to now. Hopefully, what David has put in place will sustain itself over the course of the Junior League season, which commences on October 13th with the trip to Douglas (with its Seskin-like slope – let's hope we win the toss!). Best of luck to David in his year of captaincy.

Dog Night at Kilcohan Park

First XV Captain David Kiersey, as we've already and deservedly noted, has been putting in a massive effort on and off the pitch ahead of the start of the new Junior League season. As well as helping get the First XV squad into tip-top shape, he's organised a 'Night At The Dogs' at Waterford Greyhound Stadium at Kilcohan Park to raise funds to specifically aid the squad's coaching and conditioning this season.

He's put together a terrific programme for the night and sold, with the assistance of team mates and committee members, an astonishing number of tickets for next Saturday night (priced €10), with the first race due off at 7.55pm. Should you wish to travel by bus, please contact David, with the bus (or buses depending on demand) due to leave Main Street at 7pm. The return bus journey will cost €10.

If you've already bought a ticket (or two), thanks ever so much. And if you have, then please note the following: Each ticket contains a four digit 'booster' ticket, with the fourth night on the race being the 'Booster Race' and should the digits on your ticket match the finishing order of the greyhounds, then you'll win two tickets for the Ireland/Wales Six Nations 2013 match at Lansdowne Road, including €100 and an overnight hotel stay in Dublin. A signed Munster jersey shall also be raffled on the night.

Registrations beckon!

Registrations for players at all levels now beckon. First players must have their subs paid ahead of the start of the competitive season on October 13th, with Juvenile and Youths players due to have their registrations paid by September 6th. Under-14s, 16s and 18s have resumed training on Wednesdays and Fridays at 6.30pm. All are welcome!

Many thanks to all the cyclists who participate in our 100k, it was an enjoyable but tough cycle with a very strong head wind for a large portion. Gratitude must be expressed for organisers Kenny, Peter and Richie and all those who helped ""out. All of the monies raised, over €1500, will go directly to the juvenile section in purchasing playing equipment for the coming season. Thanks to Butlers Buses and Murphy's Centra for sponsoring the refreshments at the stops on route, and those who arranged food for their return.

We have a flag day up and coming in September along with many other fundraisers so make sure and support your club in whatever way you can.

Waterford City RFC – by Damien Kennedy

Waterford City RFC was delighted to host Irish International and Grand Slam Winner Niamh Briggs with the Six Nations trophy last Friday night in Kilbarry.

Niamh who had just had knee surgery that morning showed impressive resilience and commitment in attending the club's meet and greet that evening. Briggs was on hand to pose for photos with the youth's team, women's team players, coaches and committee members.

Later in the evening committee member Jemma Jacob presented Niamh with a piece of Waterford Crystal on behalf of Waterford City RFC to congratulate her on all she has achieved on the pitch and for women's rugby. The club would like to take this opportunity to thank Niamh for taking the time to come out last Friday night and would like to wish her a speedy recovery.
