St. Munchin’s Students Upskill On Coaching Techniques

Munster Rugby recently hosted a Transition Year Coaching Course for 21 students attending St. Munchin’s College in Limerick.

The first day of the course covered an introduction to the IRFU Long Term Player Development pathway which included the rules and coaching method of Leprechaun and touch rugby. It also included a series of fun games which support learning the individual skills for rugby, the strength and conditioning for the stage two player and achieving the principles of attack. The day concluded with a lecture on practice session which included learning to plan, organize and manage a rugby session.

On day two the students were tutored on the key factors for the individual skills required for rugby. This incorporated a practical session with teams of three running a 20min session relating to one of these skills.

The participating students will continue with the practical element of the course and oversee weekly lunchtime skills sessions for the school’s first year students under the supervision of Rugby Development Officers Andy Brace and Noel O’Meara.

Practical modules will run over the course of a one month period and the young coaches will continue with their planning and managing coaching sessions under the supervision of the school’s Gamesmaster and Transition Year teachers.
