Ulster Come To Town

Check out the stats ahead of Munster’s return to Thomond Park this Friday night – against Ulster in Round 9 of the Guinness PRO12. Plus we get the thoughts of Gerhard van den Heever.

With the potential for either team to take top spot on the PRO12 table this weekend, Munster’s first home interprovincial of the season is sure to be an intense and keenly contested affair.

The hosts have won their last six matches in all tournaments, and have claimed 23 league points from the last six matches, yet surprisingly, Munster have secured more points on their travels this season than they have from their four home games.

Anthony Foley’s charges will hope that better form of late will improve their 50% success rate at home in the league, however doing so will not be easy given that Ulster have lost just once in the PRO12 to date this season. That sole defeat came at Zebre in Round 4.

Add to this that the Ulstermen have lost only one of their last five regular season games played at the homes of their interprovincial rivals (6-19 to Leinster at the RDS Arena on 28th December), and Munster will need a big performance to maintain winning ways at Thomond Park and deny Ulster a second successive victory in Limerick for the first time since the early 1990s.

Speaking after training yesterday, Munster winger Gerhard van den Heever talked about an ever improving Munster and the competition that will ensue at Thomond Park on Friday night.

“I think we are doing well at this stage. We work hard during the week. We work on trying to be clinical and very accurate in our game plan, shut down the turnovers and faults in the game. As a result I think we are playing better and better every week.

“They’re very tough (Ulster). I mean its fellow Irish mates you are playing against and contending for the Irish jersey, so if you want to make the step up and you want to leave your print on the field, then this is the weekend to do it”.

Be there to cheer on Munster as they bid to continue winning ways and build momentum ahead of a return to European Champions Cup action the following weekend.
