Minister Coveney To Officially Open Irish Independent Park
19th February 2015 By Munster Rugby
It has been confirmed today that Simon Coveney TD Minister for Agriculture, Food, the Marine and Defence will perform the official opening of the newly developed Irish Independent Park in Cork on Saturday February 28th.
Minister Coveney will join Munster Rugby Branch President Michael Goggin in officially opening Irish Independent Park ahead of the Munster v Glasgow Guinness PRO12 match (kick-off 7.15pm).
Following a €;3.2m redevelopment Irish Independent Park first opened its doors at the end of January providing an overall enhanced match-day experience. The facility upgrades were delivered with assistance from a 10-year naming rights partnership with Independent News & Media, National Lottery Funding, and the Munster Rugby Supporters Club.
BAM contractors commenced redevelopment works in June 2014 and the stadium now boasts a new West Stand and covered East Terrace. The stand includes seating for 3500, changing rooms, a medical room, a press room and hospitality space. The new development will provide a ground capacity of 10,000.
On confirming the date for the official opening Munster Rugby CEO Garrett Fitzgerald said, “We look forward to welcoming Minister Coveney to Irish Independent Park. We are delighted with the new development and believe it is a valuable addition to the rugby landscape in Cork and the province. With a venue such as this in south-Munster we hope to attract further events for the locality.”
The supporters’ match-day experience has been enhanced further with the introduction of the Bank of Ireland Family Fun Zone, located inside the Dolphin RFC entrance, and providing entertainment for all the family.
