The women’s team had already a fantastic season under their belts having taken the Munster Women’s League Division 1 title last month.

On Sunday it was time to face Abbeyfeale in the Cup final being hosted in Limerick by Garryowen FC. Having met and beaten Abbeyfeale previously in the league campaign, Clonmel were fully aware of the threat posed by the Limerick side.

With a 6pm kick-off and in front of great support for both sides, it was Clonmel’s winger Lisa Corcoran who ran in, extremely fast, the opening try for Clonmel and with a Marie Kelly conversion gave the Clonmel ladies a 7-0 lead on fourteen minutes.

Abbeyfeale responded within five minutes to narrow the margin to two points after their opening try. 7-5 to Clonmel on nineteen minutes. However the speed of Corcoran was proving a huge advantage for Clonmel and she scored two additional tries within ten minutes. At half-time Clonmel led 17-5 in what was a gripping final.

Abbeyfeale were first to register points in the second half and a try narrowed the margin to an edgy 17-10 on 54 minutes. However Lisa Tobin, Aisling Kenny and captain Mary Gorey all scored tries for Clonmel with just one additional try scored by Abbeyfeale to give the Clonmel women a winning result of 34-17 at the final whistle.

The Munster Women’s Division 1 Cup title coupled with the Division 1 League title means the Clonmel side now hold both women’s honours simultaneously for the first time in the club’s history.

It ends a truly remarkable season for the women’s side who now relish the prospect of promotion for next season. Well done to all involved as their return to glory continues!""
