Scannell: ‘Ospreys Are Hot On Our Heels’

Since his competitive debut against Cardiff Blues just over a year ago, Rory Scannell has continued to make good inroads in the senior ranks. With 16 appearances already this season, the academy playmaker is now preparing to face Ospreys in his native Cork this Sunday at 5pm.

After signing on the dotted line last month, the centre will begin a development contract at the end of this summer and will advance to a full contract for season 2017/18.

Reflecting on his form of late, Scannell commented, “I’ve played quite a bit at 10 and 12 over the last two seasons between Club, Munster A and Munster.  I’ve learnt a lot about the game management side of things in particular and thankfully we’ve returned to winning ways lately and we’ll look to take that momentum into this weekend’s game.

“12 is probably my preferred position and I’ve been playing there for the last six or seven weeks.  It’s been great to get that consistent game time.  It’s about getting that run of games and confidence.  Getting some time at 10 also has helped my kicking and distribution.”

As a proud Corkman and Dolphin player, the 22 year old is relishing the chance to run out at Irish Independent Park this weekend, but knows the difficulty of the task at hand, especially with Ospreys keen to avenge two losses on the bounce to Munster.

“Ospreys are hot on our heels on the league table and they will be looking to close that gap.  Every game in the league is now like a mini Cup Final because things are so tight at the top.  All teams are trying to qualify for Europe and the final four of the PRO12.

“Ospreys, like us, will be without a number of internationals but they still have some great players there – Sam Davies pulling the strings at 10 and Josh Matavesi in midfield so it will be a tough and physical game as it always is against Ospreys.  They will be looking to get one over on us after we nicked it over in the Liberty Stadium at the start of the season.

“It will be tough but we are looking forward to it and hopefully there will be a good crowd in Cork to get behind us.”

Be there to show your support for Rory and the men in red this Valentine’s Day.  Tickets from just €;20 for Adults and €;40 for Families (2 adults & 2 kids, meaning kids go free) can be purchased online here, from the Munster Rugby Ticket Offices at Irish Independent Park and Thomond Park, or by calling 0818 719 300.
