MRSC Donate Over 157,000 Euro To Greencore Munster Academy

MRSC members continue to play their part in the development of Munster Rugby’s future stars with the latest presentation of over EUR157,000 to the Greencore Munster Rugby Academy. The MRSC have now contributed over EUR1,000,000 to the Academy across the last number of seasons.

The Greencore Munster Rugby Academy is a 3 year player development programme with the aim of developing players to play professional rugby for Munster while also encouraging members to pursue 3rd level qualifications and balance their rugby and academic goals.

As well as on-field skills, strategies and fitness, the Academy’s all-encompassing development programme also incorporates lifestyle management, psychology, nutrition and more.

The MRSC fund a large portion of Academy activities through their Giant Draw and other fundraising methods and their tradition of supporting young home-grown talent remains alive and well with the recent presentation of €;157,606 to the Academy.

Commenting on the presentation, Peter Malone, Elite Player Development Manager, thanked MRSC members for their continued contribution to the Academy year on year. “It's fantastic, we can't tell you how important the MRSC are to what we do here in the Greencore Academy. In particular the money raised by the Supporters Club allows us to bring in extra facilities and activities outside of rugby for the lads, such as mental skills workshops, lifestyle modules, cooking demos and so on, none of which would be possible without the MRSC. It helps hugely with player development outside of what they learn on the pitch which is extremely important.”

Jennifer Kiernan, Munster Rugby Supporters Club Manager, added “We are delighted to play our part in the development of up and coming talent.   The Academy is a fundamental part of Munster Rugby and once again this year I would like to thank our members for their continued support in making this annual contribution to the Academy possible.”

A recent success story came in the form of newly awarded Young Player of the Year and Greencore Munster Academy Player of the Year Rory Scannell, who became the first player to receive both awards in the same year. After enjoying a breakthrough season in his final year of the Academy programme, the 22-year-old played for Munster on 26 occasions, made the number 12 jersey his own since December, scoring 4 tries and kicking 10 points.

Scannell is one of five players who will progress from the Academy to the senior squad next season, alongside Sean McCarthy, David Johnston, John Madigan and Alex Wootton.
