A member of the South African squad that won the 2007 World Cup, the tighthead joined Munster from Ulster in 2011, making his debut as replacement for John Hayes against Scarlets at the old Musgrave Park (now Irish Independent Park) that September.

Less than two months later, on his Heineken Cup debut with Munster, the prop became well versed in Munster's never-say-die attitude when he started in the province's famous 23-21 win over Northampton Saints, where, in the 84th minute, and after 41 phases, Ronan O'Gara kicked a drop goal to steal victory from the Englishmen.

Another of Munster's most consistent performers in recent years, the 36-year-old made the most appearances in the 2012/13 and 2014/15 seasons.  Testament to his consistency was the fact that Botha featured in all but three of Munster's European encounters across five seasons with his final appearance in red coming against Stade Francais in Paris last January. Rupturing his ACL in the game, the injury would keep him sidelined for the remainder of the season.
