O’Callaghan Back In Town
25th August 2016 By Munster Rugby
With Worcester Warriors providing the opposition for tomorrow night’s Kearys Renault Series encounter, Munster fans are preparing to welcome the province’s most capped player, Donncha O’Callaghan, back to his native Cork.
Underage rugby with his local club Highfield RFC spawned a remarkable career in red where, across 17 seasons, he made an unequalled 268 appearances for Munster, achieving six winners' medals across all competitions. Successful league campaigns netted O'Callaghan and his teammates the Celtic League in '03, the Celtic Cup in '05 and two Magners League titles in '09 and '11. However, perhaps foremost in his memory are Heineken Cup triumphs in '06 and '08 and the Munster giant is fully deserving of his place in European Cup history with more top-flight appearances than any other second row – 96 European Cup caps.
Making the move to Worcester last September, the man who gave everything to the red jersey shows no signs of letting up. In his debut season with Warriors, O’Callaghan played in all 22 of their Aviva Premiership encounters, starting in 20. A 6' 6'' powerhouse on the field and gentle giant off it, much like his time in Munster, Donncha has also emerged as a fan favourite in his new abode and was recently voted the Warriors Supporters Club Player of the Season.
Just shy of a year to the day since O’Callaghan made his final Munster appearance – in preseason action against London Irish in Cork pictured right – Munster fans are afforded the opportunity to welcome one of the province’s consummate heroes back to Irish Independent Park for what’s sure to be an entertaining affair as both sides play their final games of preseason.
