Munster To Face Clermont & Harlequins In Champions Cup

The Pool draw for the 2020/21 Heineken Champions Cup took place in Switzerland today with Munster Rugby drawn in Pool B of the new competition format.

See a video explainer of the new format at the bottom of the page.

The province will play Clermont Auvergne and Harlequins home and away in December and January (not double-headers) with fixture details to be confirmed in due course.

Munster last faced Clermont back in the 2014/15 Pool stage with the French side coming out on top in both encounters.

Their victory at Thomond Park saw them become the first and only French team to beat Munster at Thomond Park in the Champions Cup to date.

Clermont went on to be beaten by Toulon in that year’s Champions Cup decider, one of three final defeats for the French heavyweights.

They have started the new Top 14 season in flying form with fours wins from five encounters.

Harlequins boast a familiar face among their ranks as former Munster player and Coach Jerry Flannery joined the Premiership side as Lineout Coach in the summer.

Quins are another team to have emerged victorious at Thomond Park, beating Munster 20-12 in the 2011 European Challenge Cup semi-final.

The last time Munster and Harlequins faced off was the 2013 Heineken Cup quarter-final with the province securing a memorable 18-12 victory at the Stoop.

Quins finished sixth in the Premiership last season and will kick-off the new campaign in just over three weeks.
