Luke Murphy Training with Munster @INPHO
Check out the latest in our Introducing the Academy series as we catch up with 20-year-old back-row Luke Murphy.
Murphy started playing his rugby with Shannon RFC while he played with Ardscoil Rís throughout his school years which included the Munster Schools Boys Junior Cup and the Pinergy Munster Schools Boys Senior Cup.
He spoke about his influences in rugby growing up, “I always used to watch CJ Stander and the way he carried the ball, that’s what I try to do now when I play.”
Murphy returned to action with Shannon RFC last season where he lined out for the club in Division 1A of the Energia Men’s All Ireland League.
The back-row has also represented Munster age-grade sides over the years and was a regular feature in the Ireland U20s squad during last year’s Six Nations championship.
“I really enjoyed it, we had great fun, and I got really close with everyone on the tour. The matches were great, the atmosphere was excellent especially down in Cork at Virgin Media Park.”
Murphy was included in the Ireland squad for last summer’s World Rugby U20 Championship in South Africa.
“It was a long trip to get over there, but once you get settled and used to it it’s great fun. You’re essentially with your friends the whole time playing the sport you love.”
