A Review of Shannon’s Week

Last Monday was a historic day for Shannon and while the cup may have been denigrated to a secondary competition by the powers that be, Shannon still, and will continue to vigorously pursue this wonderful competition. History will record a Shannon win, but what will be forgotten in the midst of reflection in years to come, is that first time finalists, Midleton gave a fine account of themselves.

However this was Shannon’s and indeed Mick Galwey’s day. A remarkable 10-cup medals for the big man and whether he’ll be back for more has yet to be decided. Three tries were scored in the 22-13 result, with Halvey, Quinlan and McMahon quashing Midletons hopes with fine efforts. A little hoarse, but as enthusiastic as ever Frankie Flynn bellowed out The Isle for the sizeable Shannon contingent who can reflect on a successful season for the senior side.

While the AIL eluded Shannon, to win both the Munster league and cup can be looked upon as a fantastic achievement and it’s hard to see another clubs engraved silver plates sit beside each other on the base of the cup, four times consecutively in the foreseeable future. The players, management and the backroom team have a lot to be proud of and in turn their members and supporters have a lot to be grateful for to this group of people.

The Shannon senior team weren’t the only side in a final last weekend. On Sunday the U/13’s played Richmond in Thomond Park and extra time couldn’t separate two fine sides in a top class game. Early Pressure from the Shannon boys resulted in a try under the posts. They proceeded to dominate up front but Richmond used their backs to great effect and levelled the score before the half time break. It took some excellent defending from Shannon’s well-drilled side to prevent a winner for Richmond, but as the game went to extra time the general consensus was that a draw was a fair result. The game will be replayed at the same venue on Thursday night.

After a wonderful and unexpected run in the cup, the U/18’s were halted in their tracks at the semi final stage by a fine Richmond side.15 points to 8 was the final score in a very closely fought game. Shannon opened their account early when Brian O’Connor was on the end of a well executed rolling maul and it took some time before Richmond replied. It was late in the second half before the Visitors to Coonagh crossed for the winner and despite never relenting, the Shannon lads just could not come back.

It was disappointing for them, but their efforts bodes well for next season when the majority of the large panel are again underage. Well done to Coaches, John Sheran, Tom O’Connor and Ronan O’Brien.
