It was not a good weekend for sides defending their provincial titles, with three sides losing their crowns in a dramatic weekend of Cup rugby. There was a major shock at Musgrave Park where PBC defeated holders and favourites CBC in the quarter final of the Coca Cola Schools Senior Cup 12-5.

Dara Hurley gave CBC an early lead with a try, but a penalty and two drop goals from Tom Gleeson and a drop goal from Gavin Dunne gave PBC a surprise victory.

Thomond knocked Cork Constitution out of the Third Round of the Heineken Munster Junior Cup, when they won a thriller at Fitzgerald Park 17-10. Neil Thorne scored a try for the winners and Jason Cronin kicked four penalties. Darragh Clancy was the hero in Shannon’s 26-8 win over UCC at the Mardyke. A last minute penalty from Julian Leonard earned UL Bohemian a 20-19 victory over Thurles at Annacotty.

Crosshaven had a surprise 14-7 win away to Old Christians thanks to an excellent display by Dan Donovan at out half. Bruff did not have things all their own way at home to Richmond, before running out 36-13 winners. There are two Second Division sides through to the last eight. Garth Walsh scored seventeen points in Tralee’s 27-7 win away to St. Senan’s and Skibbereen ran in nine tries in their one sided 60-3 win at home to Youghal. Last season’s beaten finalists Nenagh Ormond had no difficulty in seeing off the challenge of Waterpark at Ballinakill winning 38-3.

Bandon defeated holder’s Cobh Pirates 16-11 in the Munster Junior Plate, thanks to a fine kicking display by Bryn Canniffe. A dramatic come back in injury time yielded Clanwilliam ten points, to defeat Old Crescent 28-27 at Rosbrien. Charleville won the North Cork derby over Fermoy 34-8. Two Waterford sides advanced at the expense of West Cork sides. Waterford City defeated Dunmanway 28-15 and Dungarvan had a surprising 12-0 win at home to Clonakilty.

Cashel had little difficulty in beating Ennis 29-3 and Galbally and Garryowen received walk overs.
