Munster Stars Out in Force to support Ulster Bank IRFU Summer Camps

With three weeks of the Summer Camps now completed in four different venues in Limerick, Cork and Kerry, Munster s rugby stars have been out in force to lend their support to the initiative and offer advice to the future generation of Munster Rugby players. This week, almost 90 participants at the Summer Camp in Bandon RFC were thrilled with a visit from Munster and Ireland scrum half Peter Stringer. The 60 participants at Killarney Community College were delighted with the visit from John O Sullivan. Their involvement follows visits in previous weeks from the top players of Munster Rugby, including Frankie Sheahan, Christian Cullen, Frank Murphy, Alan Quinlan, Trevor Hogan, Anthony Horgan, Denis Fogarty, John Kelly and Tomas O Leary.

In the first three weeks, over 400 children between the ages of 7-14 took part in the Summer Camps, with two camps running simultaneously at Thomond Park, Limerick and Colaiste Stiofain Naofa on Tramore Road in Cork in the first two weeks. With nine further Summer Camps set to take place around Munster in the coming weeks, almost 1000 children in total from all over the province are already signed up. For children wishing to improve their rugby skills, make new friends and have fun, places are still available on the remaining Summer Camps.

Provincial Development Manager Ultan O Callaghan is delighted with the success of the Camps to date, paying tribute to both the participants and the parents. It s been a fantastic few weeks, and much of its success is down to the wonderful attitude of the children and their parents. Similarly, the clubs and schools have been excellent in lending support, and their co-operation and support is vital.

The aim of the Ulster Bank IRFU Summer Camps is to bring more young people into contact with rugby in a fun and friendly atmosphere. With the emphasis on fun and learning rather than competition, the camps are professionally managed by IRFU Development Officers to ensure that every child that takes part gets the chance to develop their own rugby skills. Scrums and set pieces, tackles and throw-ins, drop kicks and dead ball lines, all this and more awaits those lucky kids who sign up to be a potential international player of the future!

The camps will be held across the country over the months of July and August 2005. Nationally, there will be 49 camps, 15 of which will take place in venues across Munster (Cork, Limerick, Kerry, Tipperary, Waterford).
